Thaba Trails – Family

June 4, 2017 @ 07:30 - 11:00

Ride Groups: Green, Yellow, Red & Blue

Ratings: Green/Yellow: Technical: 6/10 Hills: 7/10 Distance: up to 25Km
Red/Blue: Technical: 8/10 Hills: 9/10 Distance: 32Km

Starting From: Thaba Trails – Entrance via Southern Brickyard

Starting Time: 07h30 for 08h00

Ride Description: The tower climb at the start which used to go straight up has been replaced by a whole lot of easier switch backs. The Blue loops are still there for the technical nuts. The main Green loop is much longer.

Route Colour Codes
Yellow: NON Technical – suitable for beginners and those who are “Not So Fit”

Green: An anti-clockwise 15 km trail which has no technical challenge for the experienced riders. There is mainly single track with some Jeep track. A GOOD training ride for those training for marathons…but there are 300 meters of climbing. Not too steep but steep enough to build strength and endurance…There are escape routes for those who find the trails too challenging for their fitness levels.

Blue: A total distance ridden of 30km if all the blue and green sections are combined. Very Technical – NOT suitable for inexperienced riders. The first encounter with the technical blue sections will be LOOP A. You will enter “Prince” which is an awesome piece of single track. Start mildly through the bush with a challenging downhill followed by a sharp right turn. Some ups and downs twists and turns an 1.2km later you get spat out onto some jeep track only to re-enter KUDU which is a 600 m loop that is a really nice section. Onto the jeep track for about 50 m and you enter the attention grabbing AMON. mostly a challenging downhill but a nice “BITE” as you reach the end of this 1 km loop only to keep climbing gently till you pas Mzuzu and you can turn right into Lawrence which has a character of it’s own. Wending your way along the single track you will go through some 300 year old ruins only to re-join the green trail.

Once again your choice is to repeat the A Loop or turn left onto the start of the B LOOP. This is not as challenging but half way through when you start the climb up ” heartbreak hill ” you will experience the hill challenge. You can choose to ride the original BLUE climb or take the split up ” DION”. Now here is a challenge for you. A solid 10min climb that keeps you honest! At the top you will turn into “Abraham” with it’s trade mark of the two little drop offs! as you exit the bush and turn left you will once again meet up with the green trail.

There are quite a few fatigue distractions..Impala, Springbok, Black Wildebeest, Zebra, many small rodents can be seen….mongoose, Dassies, cane rats, jackell, scivit cats.

Visitors welcome at R30.00 per rider. Please bring some money for coffee/breakfast afterwards. JMBC members will be subsidized by JMBC and non-members must pay Thaba Trails fee.

Directions: Take the M1 south, past the city centre towards Bloemfontein. Take Exit 7 to Booysens road, keep LEFT, back towards town. After 900m turn RIGHT into Klipriver Drive, continue for 8.5 km. You will cross over the N12, and then down the hill past Virgin Active, and past 2 traffic lights. Turn RIGHT into the Southern Brickyard.
It is just after the Panorama shopping centre which is on the left. Park in the cycling car park at the back.
