The Johannesburg Mountain Bicycle Club, or JMBC, was conceived in 1989 and continues to celebrate the fun art of riding a bike in the dirt.

The club organises an array of engaging social rides throughout the year, making sure to accommodate the diverse needs and preferences of its impressive membership of over 150 individuals. These rides are carefully curated, ensuring that participants of varying fitness levels and skill sets can find suitable groups to join.Whether you're a seasoned cyclist or a beginner, the club has thoughtfully crafted rides that cater to your specific requirements, making it an inclusive and welcoming community for all cycling enthusiasts.

Weekly Rides

Rides typically take place Sunday mornings, and riders are usually divided into three groups based on their skill level, each group covering different distances. The Green group embarks on a 21-kilometer journey, the Yellow group tackles a 24-kilometer route, the Red group pushes themselves with a 29-kilometer ride, while the Blue group takes on an impressive 34-kilometer challenge.

You do not have to be a member to ride with the JMBC, visitors are always welcome at R30 per ride.

Before you join a club ride for the first time you need basic skills such as:

  • Know the gears of your bike and how and when to change them,
  • Know where the brakes are
  • Be able to ride 17kms off road in 2 hours – that means on single tracks, through sand, mud and water, over small obstacles such as logs and rocks.
  • Know how to fix a puncture,
  • Read the ride rules
  • Read 'what you need before your first ride

Please have the courtesy to arrive at the ride no less than 30 minutes before the start time so that you can get ready, sign indemnity and be sorted into the correct ride group in good time.

When bringing a friend along to a ride for the first time...do not insist that they ride in the same group as you. They generally are not equipped with the technical skills and experience required for the level at which you ride and this will only lead to frustration for the other cyclists and make managing the group tricky. Rather ride in a lower group with your friend for the first time.
